Sierra Leone Partners for Success
In November 2010, Sierra Leone launched a National Integrated Maternal and Child Health Campaign that included the distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets (LLINs). The campaign was the largest such health effort in the country’s history aimed at 100% coverage of the population at risk of contracting malaria. Three million nets were distributed with the goal of reaching 80% usage rates.
NetsforLife® and United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) joined forces to compliment national efforts in Bo and Pujehun Districts through community mobilization, training and the hanging of nets over sleeping spaces.
As a result of consistent NetsforLife® and UMCOR dvocacy at the national level, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation adopted our hang-up and follow-up strategies for implementation in their national campaign. The post campaign results are in!
In June 2011, the National Survey on Post-Campaign Ownership and Use publicized that great strides have been made and sustained for 6-months across the country. National results are in impressive…but Bo and Pujehun Districts, NetsforLife® program areas, outperformed the rest of the country in key areas.
Felicidade, Uige Province of Angola
Malaria created an enormous burden for Felicidade. The cost of the trips to the hospital depleted the family’s meager income, and with each trip she lost valuable time to work on her farm.
Elize, Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo)
Elize lives with her husband and eight children in Katanga province in DR Congo. Because malaria is rampant in her community, Elize had to spend a large portion of the family’s limited income on medical treatment for her children, who were infected repeatedly.
